Position: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – Urgent CareJob OverviewThe Certified Medical Assistant in Urgent Care is a versatile clinical professional responsible for providing both direct and indirect patient care in accordance with established standards of excellence and quality. Under the supervision of a healthcare provider, the Medical Assistant plays a vital role in addressing the patient’s primary concerns, which includes monitoring vital signs such as respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, height, weight, and temperature. Additionally, this role involves documenting patient and family needs, participating in care planning and implementation, and administering prescribed medications (oral, injection, topical, etc.) within the scope of Medical Assisting and state regulations.
Key Responsibilities- Comply with the legal responsibilities and requirements associated with the Medical Assistant role.
- Recognize significant changes in patient conditions through data collection and report findings to the provider.
- Address issues and escalate concerns to the provider, direct supervisor, or relevant internal resources.
- Exhibit excellence in care during all interactions with both internal and external customers.
- Maintain clinical and administrative competencies as per departmental guidelines to fulfill patient care and operational needs.
- Guide patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the physician's assessment.
- Travel to other facilities for provider needs or adjust hours as directed by the practice manager.
- High School Diploma or GED (mandatory)
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant post-secondary education program (preferred in all states except South Carolina)
In South Carolina, candidates must complete one of the following:
- An accredited Medical Assistant post-secondary education program
- A Career and Technical Education Health Sciences program approved by the South Carolina Department of Education
- A medical assisting program offered by a branch of the U.S. military
- A Medical Assisting Registered Apprenticeship program approved by the U.S. Department of Labor
- A training program delivered, in whole or in part, by a healthcare employer that aligns with a nationally accredited certification exam
Active Medical Assisting certification from one of the following is required:
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) from the American Association of Medical Assisting
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from American Medical Technologists
- Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) from the National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
- Nationally Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) (not accepted in South Carolina)
- Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) from the National Association for Health Professionals (not accepted in South Carolina)
- If unable to obtain MA certification, an Assessment-Based Recognition in Order Entry (ABR-OE) is acceptable (not accepted in South Carolina)
BLS Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association is required at hire for specific locations and preferred at hire, but must be obtained prior to independent patient care.
Experience- Completion of an externship or clinical lab training is preferred.
- One year of recent Medical Assisting experience is preferred.
- Document patients' medical histories, vital statistics, and test results in medical records.
- Interview patients to gather medical information and measure vital signs, weight, and height.
- Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician.
- Collect laboratory specimens, log them, and prepare for testing.
- Provide prescription and drug refill information to pharmacies as directed by the provider.
- Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, or physician instructions to patients.
- Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies.
- Conduct routine laboratory tests and sample analyses.
- Perform general office duties, including answering phones, taking dictation, and completing insurance forms.
- Complete skills or competency checklists to assist physicians in examining and treating patients.
- Exhibit strong oral and written communication skills.
- Collaborate effectively with patients, families, and teams in a high-volume environment.
- Possess knowledge of medical terminology.
- Demonstrate attention to detail and the ability to multitask.
- Utilize standard office equipment (e.g., computer, copier, phone, fax machine).
No additional training required.
CompensationSalary Range: $19.03 - $28.54
