Orientation and Mobility Specialist (O&M) - Lees Summit, MO

Make a meaningful difference guiding students toward greater independence as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist in a dynamic school-based setting. This contract opportunity runs from August 24th through May 28th and covers elementary, middle, and high school students, supporting their growth and mobility throughout the district.

You will play a vital role as an integral member of a dedicated team, benefiting from extensive orientation and ongoing support provided by the district. The schedule is full-time, Monday through Friday, but candidates seeking alternative schedules are encouraged to apply, as there may be flexibility based on your availability.

Key Qualifications:

• National certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (ACVREP/COMS) required
• Experience working with students who are blind or visually impaired, supporting their ability to navigate school and community environments
• Strong communication skills and an empathetic approach to student learning
• Commitment to facilitating independence for students across age groups
• Ability to collaborate with Families, Teachers, and Support Staff
• Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel within the district

Primary Responsibilities:

• Conduct thorough assessments and provide direct instruction to students in orientation and mobility skills
• Teach students to safely use mobility aids (canes, guide dogs), navigate public transportation, read Braille, and perform everyday activities
• Develop individualized learning plans and maintain detailed service records
• Coach students in self-advocacy, safe travel, and independent living strategies
• Partner with school teams to support the academic and life skills success of each student
