Job Description
Embark on a rewarding contract position as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist within a dynamic school environment near Independence, MO. From August 24th to May 28th, support students across elementary, middle, and high schools, helping them build essential skills for independence. This onsite opportunity offers a full-time schedule, Monday through Friday; however, candidates seeking alternative schedules are also encouraged to apply.
Bring expertise and compassion to the role by providing hands-on instruction to students who are blind or visually impaired, helping them navigate daily life with greater confidence. You’ll teach critical skills such as safe travel, cane techniques, guide dog handling, reading Braille, grocery shopping, and money management. Extensive support and orientation are provided by the district, ensuring you’re set up for success.
Desired Qualifications:
- National-level certification in Orientation and Mobility (ACVREP/COMS)
- Experience supporting students who are blind or visually impaired, preferably within a school setting
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively across various schools and student age groups
- Dedication to promoting independence and advocacy for students
Key Responsibilities:
- Evaluate the mobility needs of students and create individual plans
- Deliver direct instruction in orientation and mobility skills to students at all grade levels
- Collaborate with school staff and families to optimize student support
- Travel between multiple campuses within the district as needed
- Maintain accurate documentation and progress reports
