Job Opportunity: Program Director for Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency

We are seeking a dynamic and collaborative physician educator to take on the role of Program Director for our Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program. In partnership with an Associate Program Director, a program manager, and dedicated faculty, the Program Director will enhance resident recruitment, promote educational excellence, and prepare future obstetrician-gynecologists.

This full-time role comprises 50% dedicated to program leadership and 50% focused on clinical practice, along with an academic appointment at a prestigious medical school, with the rank determined by the qualifications of the selected candidate.

About the Residency Program

Our ACGME-accredited OB/GYN Residency Program is dedicated to cultivating outstanding clinicians, compassionate patient advocates, critical thinkers, educators, and lifelong learners. The program benefits from a multidisciplinary educational leadership team, full-time faculty, and community physicians, with a total of 20 residents.

As Maine's tertiary referral center, we provide residents with extensive exposure to both routine and complex obstetric and gynecologic care across various settings, including inpatient, ambulatory, surgical, and subspecialty environments.

Program Director Responsibilities
  • Strategic and educational leadership.
  • Resident recruitment and selection.
  • Curriculum development and educational excellence.
  • Assessment, advancement, and support of residents.
  • Program evaluation and continuous improvement.
  • Faculty engagement and development.
  • Scholarship, research, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Administrative duties and accreditation management.
Clinical and Teaching Responsibilities
  • Maintain an active clinical practice in obstetrics and gynecology or a related subspecialty.
  • Deliver high-quality, evidence-based, and patient-centered care.
  • Teach and supervise residents and medical students in clinical environments.
  • Exemplify clinical excellence, professionalism, effective communication, teamwork, and sound clinical judgment.
  • Participate in departmental call and service coverage as per the agreed clinical FTE of 0.50.
  • Ensure ongoing clinical competence, maintain credentials, and engage in professional development.
Required Qualifications
  • MD or DO degree, or an equivalent medical qualification.
  • Completion of an ACGME- or AOA-accredited residency in obstetrics and gynecology.
  • Current certification by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology or the American Osteopathic Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, or qualifications acceptable to the ACGME Review Committee.
  • Eligibility for an unrestricted medical license in Maine.
  • Eligibility for medical staff privileges at our institution.
  • A minimum of three years of documented educational or administrative experience, or qualifications acceptable to the ACGME Review Committee.
  • Demonstrated ongoing clinical activity in obstetrics and gynecology.
  • Experience in teaching and supervising residents or fellows.
  • A strong commitment to professionalism, educational excellence, and high-quality patient care.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience as a residency program director, associate program director, assistant program director, clerkship director, or other significant educational leadership roles.
  • Formal training or advanced professional development in medical education, leadership, quality improvement, or healthcare administration.
  • Experience with competency-based assessment, ACGME Milestones, and Clinical Competency Committees.
  • Proven success in resident recruitment and selection.
  • Experience in developing or implementing innovative curricula.
  • A record of scholarship in clinical medicine, medical education, research, or quality improvement.
  • Experience mentoring residents and faculty.
  • Academic achievements that support appointment at the associate professor or professor level.
  • Understanding of the healthcare needs of rural and underserved communities.
  • Experience leading change within a complex academic health system.

  • The residency program, established in 1976, has a rich history of training the OB/GYN workforce in Maine, supporting five residents annually.

  • We serve as a level IV Regional Perinatal Health Care Center, providing subspecialty OB/GYN care, including maternal-fetal medicine, gynecologic oncology, urogynecology, complex family planning, pediatric and adolescent gynecology, and reproductive endocrinology and infertility.
