Position Overview

The Respiratory Therapist II plays a crucial role in administering medications and providing respiratory care based on advanced knowledge and experience, utilizing an evaluate-and-treat approach. This position involves delivering care to patients with complex health issues, primarily in critical care settings, where independent decision-making and self-direction are essential. In addition to direct patient care, the RT II is responsible for educating patients and their families/support systems, coordinating activities, fostering staff development, and engaging in professional growth. The RT II must be attuned to the specific needs of diverse populations, addressing biological, emotional, developmental, psychosocial, and educational requirements during patient interactions. This role also includes mentoring new employees and students.

Key Responsibilities
  • Customer Service:
    • Complete patient care, documentation, and education.
    • Adopt a collaborative approach to service.
    • Foster a positive team spirit and work environment.
    • Support students and staff in their learning journeys.
  • Quality Patient Care:
    • Conduct patient assessments and therapy evaluations.
    • Collaborate with healthcare team members to plan patient care.
    • Verify orders and administer aerosolized medications, bronchial hygiene, volume expansion, oxygen, and medical gas therapy.
    • Manage ventilators, wean patients, interpret waveforms, and handle airway management tasks (intubation, extubation, tracheostomy care).
    • Perform arterial blood gas sampling and analysis.
    • Educate patients and mentor new employees, students, and peers.
    • Assist with invasive and non-invasive procedures, cardiac services, and pulmonary diagnostic testing as needed.
  • Safe & Quality Environment:
    • Ensure accurate electronic orders, charting, and billing.
    • Maintain a high level of patient safety (Medication Safety, NPSG, etc.).
    • Support performance improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing quality care.
    • Advocate for evidence-based practices.
    • Review updated and new departmental policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Adhere to all organizational policies, work standards, and codes of conduct.
Qualifications
  • Education:
    • Associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy or a Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy (preferred).
  • Licenses and Certifications:
    • All certifications must be obtained upon hire unless specified otherwise.
    • NBRC-RRT - Registered Respiratory Therapist.
    • RCP - Respiratory Care Professional.
    • BLS - Basic Life Support or equivalent certifications.
    • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support or equivalent certifications.
  • Experience:
    • 0-2 years of clinical experience, with a minimum of 6 months in critical care required.
  • Skills:
    • Strong communication and critical thinking abilities.
    • Ability to build and maintain relationships with physicians and healthcare professionals.
    • Proficient computer skills, including familiarity with databases.
    • Excellent customer relations, assessment, and communication skills are essential.
