Position Overview

This role involves overseeing and directing the daily operations of a designated shift, utilizing independent judgment to ensure the effective and safe delivery of care. You will facilitate onboarding and mentorship under the supervision of your direct leader. Additionally, you will act as a clinical resource for staff, physicians, patients, families, and other departments by providing direct patient care, administering medications, and ensuring the functionality of equipment. This position may also involve patient assignments and is responsible for promoting and executing performance improvement initiatives. You may assist with data collection and analysis related to these activities, as well as customer service, safety, and quality initiatives for your shift.

Note: New hires (after 11/13/2022) must possess one or more of the following NBRC credentials: ACCS, AE-C, NPS, RPFT (AE-C certifications issued by the National Asthma Educator Certification Board prior to September 1, 2022).

Core Responsibilities

• Leadership and Collaboration
  • Lead the shift, ensuring safe patient care by assessing patient needs and the skill levels of personnel for appropriate assignments.
  • Facilitate interdisciplinary communication and planning to guarantee timely care delivery, including discharge processes.
  • Report any concerns or needs regarding patient care or employee performance to your direct leader.
  • Assist in evaluating staff performance, providing feedback to the Supervisor on clinical skills and teamwork.
  • Distribute shift workload and assign preceptors.
  • Maintain financial responsibility concerning productivity.
  • Ensure daily equipment functionality and calibration.
• Innovation and Customer Care
  • Monitor equipment inventory and usage to ensure staff have the necessary tools for their roles.
  • Assist in maintaining appropriate staffing levels.
  • Provide clinical support to staff as needed.
  • Help with the orientation and training of new employees and student clinical rotations.
  • Support annual skill competency assessments.
  • Communicate educational needs of staff, including organizing huddles and in-services for respiratory therapy staff, while maintaining education records.
• Professional Development
  • Stay updated on knowledge related to the patient population to provide the highest standard of care.
  • Identify the learning needs of your team and communicate these to your direct leader.
  • Exemplify excellence in respiratory care practice by engaging in process improvement and committee participation.
• Exemplary Practice & Quality Outcomes
  • Conduct rounds on patients to assess the quality and appropriateness of care, implementing corrective actions as necessary through peer coaching and accountability.
  • Demonstrate excellence in respiratory care by delivering the highest standard of direct patient care.
  • Participate in the implementation and monitoring of performance improvement, customer service, and safety initiatives to enhance patient care delivery.

Other duties may be assigned as needed. Compliance with all organizational policies, work standards, and the code of conduct is required.

Qualifications

• Required Education: Associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy or a Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy (preferred).
• Required Licenses and Certifications:
  • BLS - Basic Life Support or equivalent.
  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support or equivalent.
  • PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support or equivalent, with provisional certification acceptable within 180 days.
  • NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation Program or equivalent, with provisional certification acceptable within 180 days.
  • NBRC-RRT - Registered Respiratory Therapist.
  • RCP - Respiratory Care Professional.
• Preferred Additional Certifications:
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Provider within 180 days.
  • NRP Instructor within 180 days.
• Required Experience: Current advanced credential with at least two years of clinical experience in critical care areas, including but not limited to Adult ICU, CVICU, BURN, NICU, and Emergency Departments (Adult and Pediatric). Alternatively, 100 credit hours towards a Bachelor's degree may be accepted in lieu of a degree.
