Position Overview

The Respiratory Therapist II plays a crucial role in administering medications and implementing respiratory care based on extensive knowledge and experience, utilizing an evaluate-and-treat approach. This position involves delivering care to patients with complex health issues, primarily in critical care settings, where independent decision-making and self-direction are essential. In addition to direct patient care, the RT II is responsible for educating patients and their families, coordinating activities, fostering staff development, and engaging in professional growth. The RT II must be attuned to the specific needs of diverse populations, addressing biological, emotional, developmental, psychosocial, and educational requirements while providing care. This role also includes mentoring new employees and students.

Key Responsibilities

• Customer Service:
  • Complete patient care, documentation, and education.
  • Collaborate as part of a team to enhance service delivery.
  • Foster a positive work environment and team spirit.
  • Support students and staff in their learning and development.
• Quality Patient Care:
  • Conduct patient assessments and therapy evaluations.
  • Work with healthcare team members to plan patient care.
  • Verify orders and administer aerosolized medications, bronchial hygiene, volume expansion, oxygen, and medical gas therapy.
  • Manage ventilators, wean patients, and interpret waveforms; perform airway management (intubation, extubation, tracheostomy care).
  • Conduct arterial blood gas sampling and analysis.
  • Educate patients and mentor new employees, students, and peers.
  • Assist with invasive and non-invasive procedures, cardiac services, and pulmonary diagnostic testing as needed.
• Safe & Quality Environment:
  • Ensure accurate electronic orders, charting, and billing.
  • Promote high standards of patient safety (Medication Safety, NPSG, etc.).
  • Engage in performance improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing care quality.
  • Support evidence-based practices.
  • Review updated and new departmental policies and procedures.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
• Adhere to all organizational policies, work standards, and codes of conduct.

Qualifications

• Education: Associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy or Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy preferred.
• Licenses and Certifications:
  • BLS - Basic Life Support or equivalent certification required upon hire.
  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support or equivalent certification required upon hire.
  • PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support or equivalent certification required upon hire.
  • NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation Program or equivalent certification required within 180 days of hire.
  • NBRC-RRT - Registered Respiratory Therapist certification required.
  • RCP - Respiratory Care Professional certification required.
• Experience: 0-2 years of clinical experience, with a minimum of 6 months in critical care required.
• Skills: Strong communication abilities, critical thinking skills, and the capacity to build and maintain relationships with physicians and healthcare professionals. Proficiency in computer skills, including familiarity with databases, is essential. Excellent customer relations, assessment, and communication skills are crucial for success in this role.
