Step into a rewarding opportunity supporting students across elementary, middle, and high schools as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist. Based in the North Kansas City area, you'll deliver essential services to students who are blind or visually impaired, empowering them to navigate school and community environments with confidence. This is a contract role running from August 24th through May 28th with full-time, Monday through Friday, onsite hours. Flexible schedules will be considered—if you have availability for hours outside of full-time, let us know!

Qualifications & Experience:

  • National certification through ACVREP (Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist—COMS) required
  • Prior experience supporting students with vision loss, either in educational or rehabilitation settings
  • Familiarity with mobility aids such as white canes and guide dogs
  • Skill in teaching daily navigation tasks, from reading Braille to shopping and money management
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach with school staff and families
  • Ability to travel between multiple school sites within the district

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess and evaluate students to determine mobility needs and develop individualized instruction plans
  • Teach students techniques to travel safely and independently at school, in the community, and in public spaces
  • Instruct on a broad range of adaptive daily living skills
  • Collaborate closely with educators, vision professionals, and families for integrated support
  • Maintain detailed documentation on student progress and program effectiveness
  • Participate in orientation and ongoing professional development provided by the district
