Most technical directors spend their week in governance meetings about engineering instead of doing any. This role takes the opposite bet: put the strongest mechanical mind on the hardest problems and keep the diary clear enough to think.The seat sits in the mission critical team of a global engineering consultancy, designing data centres for hyperscale, colocation, enterprise and end user clients across the UK and internationally. The workload is committed rather than hoped for, and the team is scaling because the sector will not stop growing.You become the mechanical authority on schemes where cooling strategy, resilience and energy performance decide whether the project works at all. You set technical direction, review what matters, stand in front of clients when the question is hardest, and build the senior engineers below you into your successors. The platform brings international reach and a project list smaller firms cannot offer.The remit also includes the part most firms forget to fund: research, tooling and the standards that decide how the next hundred projects get designed. You get a say in how the discipline itself moves forward, not just how this quarter's schemes get delivered. That is what technical leadership is supposed to mean.If you have the depth but your current practice keeps spending your time on everything except engineering, this is the role that gives it back.
