JOB PURPOSESmall Works Engineer Fire IndustryAs a Small Works Engineer at Fire Safe Services , you will be responsible for the installation, modification, and commissioning of fire safety systems across a variety of sites. Your work will contribute directly to the delivery of high-quality, compliant fire protection solutions for our clients.Working within the Small Works team , you will handle planned minor installation projects, including the upgrade and extension of existing fire alarm systems, as well as smaller standalone installations. Youll be expected to ensure all work is completed to the highest standard and in line with relevant regulations and company procedures.The role is mobile, primarily covering the Midlands , with occasional travel to surrounding areas. Projects will vary in size and complexity, requiring a flexible and proactive approach.A company van , tools, laptop, and phone will be provided to support you in your role.We offer a training and development program to help you continue growing your technical skills and progress within the business.KEY ACCOUNTABILITIESOversee the delivery of small works projects , including fire alarm system installations, modifications, and upgrades, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and to the required standard.Manage and coordinate small works engineers and subcontractors , ensuring effective resource planning, site supervision, and clear communication.Maintain strong client relationships , acting as a main point of contact for project-related communication and ensuring client expectations are met or exceeded.Ensure full compliance with industry regulations, health & safety standards, and company procedures across all small works activities.Monitor project progress and quality , conducting site visits, reviewing documentation, and resolving issues as they arise.Support technical development of the team , identifying training needs and mentoring junior engineers to improve capability and performance.Ensure accurate and timely completion of project documentation , including electronic job sheets, commissioning records, and client sign-off.Assist with quoting and project planning , including material procurement, labour allocation, and risk assessments.PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS / WORK EXPERIENCENVQ Level 2 or 3 in Fire Alarm Systems / Electrical InstallationBAFE SP203-1 certification (or working towards)FIA (Fire Industry Association) Training Certificates , including:Fundamentals of Fire Detection & Alarm SystemsDesign, Installation, Maintenance, and Commissioning modules17th/18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671)CSCS/ECS Card (relevant discipline)IPAF / PASMA / Asbestos Awareness / Working at HeightFull UK Driving Licence (essential for mobile roles)SSSTS / SMSTS (beneficial for those managing sites or leading teams)Key SkillsStrong understanding of BS 5839 Part 1 (fire alarm system design, installation, and commissioning)Ability to install, modify, and commission a variety of addressable and conventional fire alarm systems (e.g. Gent, Advanced, Kentec, Morley, C-Tec)Confident with cable containment (tray, trunking, conduit) and general electrical works related to fire alarm installationsProficient in interpreting system designs, drawings, and technical specificationsCapable of working to deadlines and managing small-scale projects independently or as part of a teamClear communicator with client-facing skillsStrong problem-solving and fault-finding abilitiesCompetent in completing electronic job sheets, commissioning certificates , and as-fitted drawingsAwareness of health and safety regulations and site compliance proceduresRelevant Work ExperienceMinimum 35 years' experience working with fire alarm systems, preferably in small works or projectsDemonstrable experience with installation, upgrades, and commissioning of fire detection systems across commercial, industrial, or residential sitesExperience working with main contractors, site managers, and other trades on live construction or refurbishment sitesPrevious experience using laptops, commissioning tools, and diagnostic software to configure and test systemsExperience in client liaison , attending site meetings, and producing basic reports or documentationFamiliarity with other life safety systems such as emergency lighting, AOVs, and fire extinguishers (optional, but advantageous)TPBN1_UKTJ
