In this role, the Attorney is responsible for analyzing complex legal and factual issues, conducting extensive research, and developing well-reasoned legal strategies. They independently create and present defense strategies on behalf of clients, preparing complex pleadings, written discovery, depositions, petitions for reconsideration, and trial briefs with a high degree of autonomy. Collaboration with Claims Partners is essential to achieve optimal outcomes for Hartford insureds. The attorney provides timely and effective communication, legal advice, and support to clients, while maintaining professional diplomacy in interactions with courts, witnesses, opposing counsel, and co-counsel. They facilitate the prompt and efficient resolution of cases and independently prepare and present witnesses and evidence in trials, hearings, arbitrations, and alternative dispute resolution proceedings. Additionally, they research, draft, file, and argue appellate briefs in reviewing courts. The role includes participation in team huddles, conducting in-house training for junior associates and claims partners, and engaging in claims file reviews. To maintain a high level of professional expertise, the attorney regularly attends continuing legal education seminars.

QUALIFICATIONS:
\n Note- This position may be filled as a Staff Attorney or a Senior Staff Attorney commensurate with a candidate’s experience.
Qualified Staff Attorney candidates will possess the following requirements:
\n• Minimum of 2 years of legal practice experience handling complex
\n Workers’ Compensation cases.
\n • JD from accredited law school and license to practice in the state of
\n California.
\n • Trial experience is preferred.
\n • Positive minded and collaborative team-player attitude.
\n • Strong legal research and writing skills.
\n • Solid MS Office proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook).
\n • Lexis Nexis experience is a plus!
\n • Self-directed with excellent organizational and prioritization skills.
\n • Strong computer skills and the ability to quickly leverage new software
\n as required.
Qualified Senior Staff Attorney candidates will possess the following requirements:
\n• Minimum of 5 years of legal practice experience handling complex/life
\n pension Workers’ Compensation cases.
\n • JD from accredited law school and license to practice in the state of
\n California.
\n • Trial experience is preferred.
\n • Positive minded and collaborative team-player attitude.
\n • Excellent legal research and writing skills.
\n • Strong MS Office proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook)
\n • Lexis Nexis experience is a plus!
\n • Self-directed with excellent organizational and prioritization skills.
\n • Strong computer skills and the ability to quickly leverage new software
\n as required.
WHAT ELSE CAN YOU TELL ME?
\nThis position is a remote work opportunity. WCAB matters are primarily virtual and may require an in-person appearance at the request of a Workers’ Compensation Judges or for trials. The selected candidate will travel within the following geography: Oakland and San Francisco, California. To support timely attendance at required in-person proceedings and business needs, candidates should reside within a reasonable commuting distance of these venues. We offer flexible work arrangements and enjoy a business casual work environment.
\nCompensation
\nThe listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$128,000 - $192,000\nThe posted salary range reflects our ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
