Senior Design Engineer
\n The Role
\n The purpose of this role is to lead and carry out detailed structural design and checking of temporary works and permanent works for civil engineering, and to provide technical support to design assist with operational activities.
\n Key Responsibilities
\n Technical design

\n
• Lead, prepare and oversee detailed technical designs (including calculations, drawings, risk assessments, design certificates)
\n
• Undertake preliminary designs and coordination with other parties
\n
• Obtain independent checks and/or third-party technical approvals (e.g. for rail works)
\n
• Ensure design outputs meet CDM, health and safety and environmental complianc
\n

Technical support

\n
• Provide technical information and advice
\n
• Propose and/or develop value-engineered alternative solutions (during design or construction phases)
\n
• Undertake a technical review of method statements for complex or unusual methods
\n
• Undertake a review of defects or compensation events and advise on solutions
\n

Administrative support

\n
• Assist with the approval of external suppliers
\n
• Assist with the developing and maintaining processes, procedures and standards for technical design
\n
• Obtain or provide pricing for estimating purposes
\n

General responsibilities

\n
• Liaise with clients, customers, suppliers and third parties as necessary
\n
• Assist with promoting best practices internally
\n
• Assist with promoting the Company to customer
\n

About you
\n Essential

\n
• Previous experience within the structural engineering field, experience in the detailed design of structures either permanent or temporary works including the use of frame analysis software, structural design software and the use of CAD software for design purposes and sketches
\n
• Ability to carry out calculations by hand or in software such as MathCAD
\n
• Working knowledge of relevant industry specifications (Eurocodes, BS 5975 and other BS standards for structural design still used in the industry)
\n
• Experience in a structural engineering office carrying out design calculations, analysis and developing or following structural methodology and overseeing other team members
\n
• Degree, or equivalent, in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering
\n
• Thorough knowledge of structural principles
\n
• Knowledge of construction processes, methods, etc.
\n
• Ensure designs meet performance, safety, quality and cost requirements.
\n
• Good team worker and able to coach others, but also able to exercise own judgement and work independently and manage own time and tasks
\n
• Effective communicator and able to assert own view
\n
• Ability to identify structural suitability, critical load cases
\n

Desirable

\n
• A mix of site and design office experience
\n
• Incorporated or Chartered membership, or equivalent, with a relevant professional institution (or en route to achieving such a qualification)
\n
• CSCS card
\n
