Physician (Family Practice)

Position Summary:

This role is based at the Family Clinic located in Fort Gregg-Adams, VA.

Fort Gregg-Adams is situated just three miles east of Petersburg, Virginia, approximately 116 miles from Washington D.C., and 21 miles from Richmond, the capital of Virginia. Richmond boasts a vibrant cultural scene, featuring top-notch museums, universities, a symphony orchestra, professional ballet and opera, as well as a variety of theater companies and art galleries. Civilian personnel play an essential role in supporting the mission of the Department of Defense. They bring skills that are not readily available within the military, yet are vital for military operations. The Department of Defense combines the expertise of both military and civilian members to create a cohesive Total Department of Defense.

As a Family Practice Physician, your responsibilities will encompass, but are not limited to:

• Conducting examinations for active duty personnel, family members, and other authorized beneficiaries to identify diseases and medical conditions.
• Providing appropriate care or referring cases that require hospitalization or specialized treatment.
• Performing various procedures, which may include vasectomies, simple fracture reductions, lumbar punctures, emergency deliveries, endometrial biopsies, joint aspirations/injections, and procto-sigmoidoscopies.
• Assessing physical requirements and executing physical examinations for different categories of military and civilian staff.
• Supervising medical students, externs, residents, and other non-professional healthcare providers as necessary.

Essential Qualifications for Supervisory Physician (Family Practice):

Educational Background: A Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree from an accredited institution in the United States or Canada, recognized by a valid accrediting body at the time of graduation. Alternatively, a Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school may be accepted if it provides education and medical knowledge comparable to accredited U.S. institutions, as evidenced by permanent certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the U.S. and graduate education abroad.

Postgraduate Training: Following the attainment of a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree, candidates must have at least one year of supervised clinical experience, such as a one-year internship or the first year of a residency program in an accredited institution.

Licensure/Certification: Applicants must possess a permanent, full, and unrestricted medical license to practice in a state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory.

Experience Required for GP-14 Level: Relevant experience includes both paid and unpaid work, including volunteer roles through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). All qualifying experience, including volunteer work, will be considered. To qualify based on experience, your resume must detail at least four years of residency training in the relevant specialty or equivalent experience and training in Family Practice. This required experience should encompass a broad range of medical duties focused on comprehensive patient care for individuals of all ages, including advanced examination, diagnosis, and treatment to ensure effective care post-discharge.
