Job Description
This pathway consists of four distinct levels, determined by the RN's experience, education, and qualifications.
- Level I: Less than 12 months of RN experience.
- Level II: 12 months to less than 3 years of RN experience.
- Level III: 3 years to less than 8 years of RN experience.
- Level IV: 8 years or more of RN experience.
Position Overview
The RN Complex Care is responsible for delivering direct nursing care to patients and their families, adhering to established policies and practices within a complex care environment.
Location: Main Campus
Unit: ICU-1
Shift: 36 hours, Evenings | Nights 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM
Weekends and holidays are mandatory.
Unit Summary:
ICU-1 is a 12-bed Intensive Care Unit that caters to both medical and surgical patients facing critical conditions, including cardiac, pulmonary, neurological, hematologic, obstetric, gastrointestinal, renal, vascular, and multi-system issues. Patients may require hemodynamic or respiratory support, intensive monitoring, or specialized nursing care, which could involve IABP, Impella devices, lysis, EKOS, TPA, hemodialysis, CRRT, PA lines, or 24-hour EEG monitoring.
Staff in the ICU are provided with continuous training opportunities, both at the bedside and in classroom settings. Newly hired nurses engage with AACN’s online training program, ECCO, as part of their onboarding process. Our commitment is to ensure high-quality care for every patient in the ICU.
Job Responsibilities
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid Massachusetts RN Licensure.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
- Department-specific certifications may be required based on the type of patient care provided.
- Experience level must align with I, II, III, or IV classifications.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
Duties and Responsibilities: The following duties are intended to outline the general nature of the work and are not exhaustive. Additional responsibilities may be assigned.
- Engage in and maintain awareness of performance improvement initiatives.
- Evaluate and integrate evidence-based practices and research into clinical care.
- Conduct and accurately document clinical assessments.
- Develop, implement, and assess individualized patient care plans.
- Utilize professional nursing judgment to tailor care plans based on patient assessments.
- Manage patient assignments by delegating tasks effectively according to patient needs and team member skills.
- Create comprehensive educational plans for patients and families, utilizing appropriate resources and documenting per departmental standards.
- Support patient and family rights by facilitating informed decisions and advanced directives.
- Continuously assess and adjust care plans based on changes in patient health status.
- Formulate comprehensive discharge plans, incorporating relevant resources and referrals, including community services.
- Assist in the development of new staff members and support their integration into the unit.
- Mentor department staff to foster professional growth through precepting.
- Engage in professional development by identifying learning needs and pursuing relevant education.
- Participate in departmental committees as required.
Physical Requirements:
- Occasional lifting of 30-35 lbs and repositioning of patients.
- Prolonged periods of standing and walking.
- Occasional twisting, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling, sitting, kneeling, and squatting.
- Exposure to infectious diseases and potential carcinogenic substances.
- Risk of exposure to blood-borne pathogens.
- Fine manual dexterity is necessary for patient handling.
- Visual and auditory acuity required for monitoring patient care.
Skills & Abilities:
- Effective communication skills with patients, families, physicians, and the healthcare team.
- Knowledge and application of the nursing process.
